Events: The Smith Ranch 4th of July Jamboree 2009

On Saturday, July 4th, Independence day celebrations begin early at Smith Ranch.  The 4th of July Jamboree will go from 10 a.m. to 11 p.m. at 25440 Beckendorff Road, just north of Old Katy (see map below).   The 4th of July Jamboree will feature plenty of family entertainment, live music from local bands, $5 BBQ plates, paddle boating, a moonwalk, arts and crafts, a home-run derby, a silent auction, and even a one-of-a-kind Independence day car show featuring vintage as well as new models.

There will be vendors and activities all day long, and the celebration will end with a July 4th fireworks finale.  Admission is $10 for adults and $5 for children.  Kids 3 and under get in for free.  The There will be plenty of ways to cool off, so be sure to wear your bathing suits to have fun on the water slides. The precious puppy pictured here is Sugar, my one-eyed Maltese-Poodle, or “Malti-Poo”. She has two sisters: a Lhasa Apso named Madeleine and a beautiful white Husky named GiGi. You might guess that I love my canine daughters, and that like many dog lovers, I care very much about the treatment they receive. While medical treatment is of utmost importance, grooming is a constant battle as well. My white dogs get so dirty so fast and so badly (especially Sugar), that it takes patience and skill for a groomer to impress me. Read the story »

Katy Sports: Giving Bike Riders a Place to Call Home

It’s been over a decade since I lived in a place I could call home, but after moving to Katy, I knew I found the place I belonged. I’ve since settled down, bought a home, got married, volunteer in the community, and even started my own business. My wife, Jessica, and I are both fitness fanatics, so instead of the typical anniversary gift exchange/trip, we opted for a pair of new bikes so we can spend more time exercising together. I’ve seen more people on bicycles in the Katy area than anywhere else I lived in the past, so it was inevitable that I would eventually join in. We were both excited about the process and after shopping around, we chose our anniversary presents, 2 new shiny bicycles.
