maziel

The face, or voice of the disc jockey has come a long ways since its birth in the 19th century. In retrospect, the disc jockey also known as a d.j has been a driving force in music since the debauchery and excess of the Studio 54 days to the rags-to-riches origins of rap. The d.j is not exclusive to radio anymore, some superstar d.j.s spin for trust fund 20-somethings in the Hamptons during the summer and rub elbows with European glitterati on their yearlong pilgrimage to make people dance.

Sales Tax on Real Estate = Price Increase to Homeowners

Published on March 19, 2009 by Julie Fuelling

sales-tax-real-estateThe Texas Association of Realtors, TAR, located in Austin, has issued a statement to inform homeowners of several worrisome  proposals making the rounds at the state Capitol. According to Brook Hunt, chairman of TAR,  “They include bills that propose implementing a sales tax on (residential) real estate, known as a ‘real estate transfer tax’. These proposals would substantially increase the costs of homeownership at the worst possible time.”

Hunt continued, “I don’t think you have to tell any homeowner that now is not the time to increase the costs associated with real estate, so we’re very surprised to see these proposals this legislative session. As a state, we only rank 42nd in homeownership, but have made slow and steady progress in recent years. Legislation that shuts out even more Texas families from the American dream of homeownership would be incredibly short-sighted.” Read more

Beware of Economic Stimulus Refund Scams!

Published on March 4, 2009 by Pat Bennett

Economic Stmulus ScamsIf you receive an e-mail, supposedly from the IRS, claiming that you need to click on a link and fill out the necessary information to receive your 2008 Stimulus Economic Refund, don’t be fooled. It looks legitimate, but it is not. Do not respond or open the link, as it may place a virus onto your computer. The IRS does not initiate contact through e-mail.

They may also ask you to give them your bank account number and routing number, etc. and they will make a direct deposit of the stimulus check, directly to your bank account. Do not do that either! This has nothing to do with your stimulus check, they now have your bank account number and routing number and can do almost whatever they want with your money.

Anyone can be a victim of financial abuse. There are lots of scam artists out there and lots of people too willing to trust them. Seniors are often the target of those scams. The older generation is thought to be more trusting—raised to believe that a man’s word is his bond. And many have built up a nice nest egg from years of saving and investing. But by knowing what to look out for, and what not to fall for, you can keep your money and belongings safe from greedy criminals. Many of these greedy criminal groups operate overseas—Nigeria, Ghana, Russia to name three countries. Look for more information in future articles.

If you have had either of these things happen to you, please e-mail me the circumstances—I want to keep a log of incidents of scams and report them to the proper authorities. I invite your comments!
