Zumiez Skateboarding Tour is “Bringing Happy Back” to Katy

katy-mills-skateboardingWe have our fair share of skaters in the Katy area, and they will be happy to know that the annual skating competition & live music event known as the Zumiez Couch Tour 2009 will be at Katy Mills Mall on June 14th. This year’s tour is “bringing happy back”, and the Katy stop features a pro skateboarding demonstration by the Lakai Team, including Marc Johnson, Brandon Biebel, Cairo Foster, Mike Mo Capaldi, Vincent Alvarez, Jeff Lenoce, & Rob Welsh. Fallen Veterans Honored on Memorial Day

Memorial Day - Katy Veterans VFWOn Monday, the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9182 (Katy, Texas) honored fallen servicemen and women with a taditional Memorial Day ceremony held at Magnolia Cemetery.  The ceremony started with a flag raising and speeches given by Katy Mayor Don Elder, Jr. and congessman Michael McCaul.  Speeches were followed by a wreath-laying ceremony and 21-gun salute.  Taps was played on the bugle at the end of the ceremony. The events of this week surrounding the alleged assault at McMeans Junior High and the attention it brought upon that school is a reminder that the way we respond to events that happen in our district can have as much impact – either positive or negative – as the event itself.

There has historically been a tremendous amount of support from the community for McMeans Junior High, as well as for all of our schools in Katy ISD. Whether for comfort, convenience, or entertainment let´s face it, cars are built to use. But all that use can lead to “car clutter”, just as in your home or office. Think about it. Hot Nights, Cool Jazz Returns to LaCenterra this Summer

LaCenterra at Cinco Ranch announces the return of it’s summer live jazz Thurday night concert series, Hot Nights, Cool Jazz, starting June 4 and continuing through July 30, 2009.  Guests are invited to unwind after a long day (6pm-9pm) and ease into the weekend with the improvisational artistry of the area’s premier jazz musicians each Thursday.

Fort Bend Symphony Concert & Fundraising Event

What does an orchestra conductor do? Now is your chance to find out!  Héctor Agüero, Jr., Music Director for the Fort Bend Symphony Orchestra, has agreed to let one of his conducting batons go to the highest bidder at the group’s upcoming concert and fundraising event on June 7, 2009 at the Stafford Centre.  Mayor Leonard Scarcella of Stafford will be the celebrity guest auctioneer.

In addition to taking home the prized baton, the winner will receive a conducting mentoring lesson from Maestro Agüero.  This lesson will help prepare the fledgling conductor for their debut as they conduct the “Star Spangled Banner” at the 2009-2010 Fort Bend Symphony Orchestra season opening concert. The Katy Area Chamber of Commerce’s Monthly Membership Luncheon held on Tuesday, May 12 honored the 53 2009 KISD Teachers of the Year.  The keynote address was given by Giff Nielsen, sports personality.

Each teacher was presented a silver clock with a frame on each side engraved to commemorate the occasion.  The gifts for the teachers also included a cash gift from Chamber members as well as a gift bag filled with gifts donated by the Katy Area Chamber of Commerce members.  Read more

HCC Faculty Member Receives Second Fulbright Scholarship

Bryant Evans Houston HCCBryant Evans, a Houston Community College geography professor, will travel with thirteen others from across the country to the Middle East this summer as a recipient of the Fulbright-Hays Scholarship.  The Fulbright-Hays travel seminar is a short-term study abroad program for primary through postsecondary instructors.  Mr. Evans, who has taught at HCC for six years, is expected to depart in mid-June for Washington D.C. where he will undergo an orientation to the Middle East prior to departing to Oman and Jordan. Student Excellence Award Winners Announced

Katy ISD has announced 73 winners of the 2009 Student Excellence Award for 2009, the district’s highest award for graduating seniors. Award winners are selected by their individual high schools, with 12 students each from the six four-year schools and two students from Miller Career & Technology Center.  Each student names an outstanding teacher, who has served as a special mentor, supporter and inspiration to him or her.
