9/11 Katy VFW Memorial Service Memories

The Katy VFW Post 9182 held an eighth anniversary remembrance service of the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001 last Friday evening.  Jr. Vice Commander David Brasell led the welcoming remarks under overcast skies at LaCenterra shopping center.  A crowd of patriotic Americans, including a local Girl Scout troop from the San Jacinto Council, endured the rain in recognition of all who lost their lives on 9-11, 2001 and in honor of those who continue to serve to protect our nation.
The symbolic flag presentation, which drew a standing ovation from the audience after the final flag was presented to a young wounded warrior, was led by the Post Commander, Colonel (Ret) Peyton Lumpkin and Ladies Auxiliary President Karon Cramer.  American Flags were presented to four extraordinary local heroes who have dedicated their lives to serving our community.  Those recognized were Sgt. Mike Waller from the Fort Bend Sheriff’s Department and Fireman Bob Frankovich from the Katy Fire Department representing those first responders who died in the 9/11 attack, Anne Hodge, President/CEO of the Katy/West Houston Chamber of Commerce representing those who helped revive the business community after it was decimated by the attacks, and Sgt. Torrey Kramer, a wounded combat veteran from Operation Iraqi Freedom.  Veterans from the audience who served in Operation Enduring Freedom (OEF), Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF), and Afghanistan were also recognized.
Sr. Vice Commander, Colonel (Ret) Mike Mastrangelo, keynote speaker, stated, “What has made this country so special and such a threat to the extremists. . . .is the determination to embrace the values set forth by our founding fathers 233 years ago.  The concept of liberty was the hallmark of their efforts . . . and will be protected and defended.  The responsibilities of citizenship will be honored and the call of the extremist mind will be rejected by citizens who understand and appreciate our history.”  He touched on why it is important to remember “what really happened on 9-11, 2001”, from the bravery of the passengers on Flight 93 to the continued attacks around the world and how “we” citizens must remain vigilant, especially for our children and grandchildren.  We must learn from this devastating event to prevent similar tragedies.

The speeches were followed by Red Skeleton’s Pledge of Allegiance, presented by Chief of Staff Stephen Brady, which captured the attention of many children in attendance and brought smiles to those who remembered the comedian.  Songs “Have you Forgotten?” by Darrell Worley and “God Bless the U.S.A.” by Lee Greenwood drew tears of emotion from some in attendance.  After a 21-gun salute by the Katy VFW Honor Guard, Taps was played on the bugle by the oldest member of the Katy VFW, George Berg.  The solemn remembrance ceremony concluded after the colors were retired. The ceremony was well received by the community and will be presented at LaCenterra next year.
