This is a Great Time to Start Your Job Search!
By Mary-Helen Giles.
If you are one of many local Katy residents looking for a new job or just thinking of making a change, things are finally starting to look up! Recent statistics show that the rate of unemployment is starting to trend downward and layoffs are slowing down. In addition, the use of temporary help across the Gulf Coast region is increasing. In past recoveries, this is often the first indicator that the economic situation is improving. In fact, recent conversations with hiring managers in the Greater Houston area have given us even greater reason for hope: budgets being prepared now for 2010 actually allow for addition of permanent staff in several key areas.
So how can you take advantage of this situation? Now is the time to dust off that old resume, take your interview suit to the cleaners and start networking. The first step in this process is to contact anyone you plan to use as a reference in your job search. Let them know that you are looking for a new position and ask them if they will provide a reference for you. Confirm that you have all of their current contact information, including address, phone number and email address. Many employers will run detailed background checks on new hires, so make sure that all of the information on your resume is correct (especially dates) and that your education information can be verified. In other words, if you still owe an old library fine to your alma mater, now is the time to pay it so they will confirm your degree! Depending on the type of job you are seeking, it may also be a good time to double check your credit report to make sure all of the information is correct. Read more

The Employed Katy Teen (A Guide to Getting a Job in Katy, Texas)
Katy teens usually can be broken up into three financial categories: don’t need to work and probably won’t, have to work to make some college cash, and don’t need to work but want their own riches.
Whatever the category, there is one thing that I have learned in my professional life is that steady part time, full time, or summer jobs is experience-no matter the establishment (i.e. fast food, grocery, retail, intern, etc.) that is a valuable tool to help you stand out like a bright, dazzling light when you are interviewing for your career, next employment, or that prestigious college. Why? Because jobs demonstrate that you are more than a gossiping shop-aholic video game playing boy/girl loving dramatic teen or high school grad, but that you are a teen that will show up on schedule, respect your boss (even if he/she is kind of a jerk), complete your responsibilities, and not give up and quit when you really hate your job this week. By the way, colleges love and look for responsible individuals. And for good reason too. Read more
Job Ministries Help the Unemployed find Work
By Melissa Santos
Because of the lessons learned in the 1983-1987 recession, Houston has stayed comparatively dry in today’s recession storm, but there is concern for those who have suffered. After the recession in the 80’s, Houston diversified from the dominating oil industry by adding more than 680,000 jobs, almost 50% expansion, in an array of fields outside the oil industry. Although our city and surrounding areas has been weathered by the recession, we can be grateful to our politicians in the 90’s for giving Houston an umbrella of job diversity which gives Houstonians some protection from the storm the entire country is in now. Don’t Do It! Don’t Cut Up Those Credit Cards!
The financial counselors tell us we should get rid of our credit cards. Don’t use our credit cards!
Others wisely tell us to keep our current credit timely, to use our credit cards regularly, but to pay off each balance monthly. The latter is the way to go if you ever want to buy a house. That is, if you need a mortgage to purchase.
Credit ratings can be addressed even in these times of tight money. No credit rating, due to being a cash-for-everything purchaser, is a brake-slam in the home buying process. No credit equals no mortgage.
Unfair as it sounds, it’s exactly the burden currently facing clients of mine. These are hard-working, hard-saving, productive members of our society. No good, the American way is to use credit. Credit equals the ability to get more credit. Read more
