Fulshear Friday Night Independence Day Celebration Honors Veterans July 3rd

Fulshear Friday Night Fireworks The 4th of July festivities start a day early this year in Fulshear.  The City of Fulshear Independence Day parade has been scheduled for Friday, July 3rd.  The event is kicked off with a parade Grand Marshalled by Fulshear’s oldest and most decorated veteran and local Judge Carl B. Bentley…The parade starts at the Bob Lutts Library, 8100 FM 359 S at approximately 6:30 p.m.  The parade will honor veterans with both classic and antique cars, horses, floats of all types, Miss Fulshear Friday Night, Lil’ Miss and Mr. Firecracker.  A ceremony to honor veterans follows the parade, and the event continues into the night with live music and games leading to a firworks show at sundown. William Shine: Reminiscing on Broadway’s Heyday

trumpetIt’s about twenty-three minutes past 6 pm. The apartment is lit with natural light from the partially opened blinds. William Shine, 82, is sitting in front of his Mac computer in his kitchen table that doubles as a desk, watching television.

We exchange formalities and he makes his way from the kitchen to his recliner, two steps away, and he dives into it.

“Well first of all, I have a Master’s degree in music,” he says; Shine attended the Manhattan School of Music. “A hard school to get into and an easy one to get thrown out of.” Read more

Zumiez Skateboarding Tour is “Bringing Happy Back” to Katy

This year’s tour is “bringing happy back”, and the Katy stop features a pro skateboarding demonstration by the Lakai Team, including Marc Johnson, Brandon Biebel, Cairo Foster, Mike Mo Capaldi, Vincent Alvarez, Jeff Lenoce, & Rob Welsh. There will be free live music performances by Emery and Revolution Mother featuring Mike V.   Read more

Hot Nights, Cool Jazz Returns to LaCenterra this Summer

LaCenterra at Cinco Ranch announces the return of it’s summer live jazz Thurday night concert series, Hot Nights, Cool Jazz, starting June 4 and continuing through July 30, 2009.  Guests are invited to unwind after a long day (6pm-9pm) and ease into the weekend with the improvisational artistry of the area’s premier jazz musicians each Thursday.

Courtyard beverage service will be available from The Wine Next Door and Fish City Grill. Food and nonalcoholic beverages are available from any LaCenterra restaurant or specialty food retailer.   All events are free and open to the public. Read more

Fort Bend Symphony Concert & Fundraising Event

What does an orchestra conductor do? Now is your chance to find out!  Héctor Agüero, Jr., Music Director for the Fort Bend Symphony Orchestra, has agreed to let one of his conducting batons go to the highest bidder at the group’s upcoming concert and fundraising event on June 7, 2009 at the Stafford Centre.  Mayor Leonard Scarcella of Stafford will be the celebrity guest auctioneer.

In addition to taking home the prized baton, the winner will receive a conducting mentoring lesson from Maestro Agüero.  This lesson will help prepare the fledgling conductor for their debut as they conduct the “Star Spangled Banner” at the 2009-2010 Fort Bend Symphony Orchestra season opening concert. 2009 Festival of Greece at Saint Basil the Great

Greek Festival Houston 2009 St Basil ChurchOn Thursday May 14th through Sunday, May 17th, Sain Basil the Great Orthodox Church will host its annual Festival Of Greece with plenty of traditional Greek dancing, food, music, live performances, cooking lessons and even a “major league” Gyro eating contest sponsored by Niko Niko’s.  They will also have 50 cent carnival games for the kids.  The festival is free on Thursday and only $3 for adults on during the weekend.  Kids 12 and under get in free every day.  Read more

lone-star-stoutThis year the Houston International Festival, better known as iFest, will pay homage to the country of Ireland. Katy residents have an incentive to attend this year as one of their own will join the roster.

Hugh Morrison from the trio, Lonestar Stout will join his band mates, Mason Brown and Jed Marum to perform Celtic tunes. Morrison, a native of Scotland, is excited to perform in honor of Ireland. Generally, Celtic music brings thoughts of men in kilts striding in unison, gusting on bagpipes. And yes, traditionally those thoughts are correct, but Lonestar Stout takes it up a notch combining banjos with harmonicas and has been known to collaborate with rock bands. Read more

In retrospect, the disc jockey also known as a d.j has been a driving force in music since the debauchery and excess of the Studio 54 days to the rags-to-riches origins of rap. The d.j is not exclusive to radio anymore, some superstar d.j.s spin for trust fund 20-somethings in the Hamptons during the summer and rub elbows with European glitterati on their yearlong pilgrimage to make people dance.
