Katy Construction Development Projects & GrowthThere are quite a few new construction projects going on and many have just been completed. Here is a short list of recent noteworthy projects to watch.

Texas Children’s Hospital
A $220 million, 490,000 square foot medical complex broke ground recently near Barker Cypress and 1-10. The campus is set to open in 2010 and will be built in phases. The first phase will be a 190,00 square foot outpatient building, followed by a 280,000 square foot inpatient facility.

Pin Oak Village
A 37,000 retail strip center close to Katy Mills Mall is set to be completed in August. It’s anchor store will be CiCi’s Pizza and other slots will be leased by a hair salon, dry cleaner, and cigar store, among others.

Best Western Hotel
A 46,000 square foot hotel is currently under construction near Katy Mills Mall and expected to open before the end of 2008. It will have 78 rooms with 30 suites. KEIV Hospitality Group, developer of SpringHill Suites also close to Katy Mills, is planning to build two other hotels in the area: A Hilton Garden Inn and a Comfort Suites.

A new training facility will provide post-graduate training for geology, engineering, oil and gas, and business professionals. The proposed 30,000 square foot training center is set to open sometime in Fall of 2008.

Of course, this is just a peek at the many projects going on in the Katy area. The Katy Economic Development Council has been hard at work encouraging and implementing growth into the year 2010. They are setting their sites on several industries to attract in order to spur growth.

Target Industries

Integrated Building Systems
Katy is at the epicenter of the nation’s booming Sunbelt region. The strong regional transportation system provides quick access to thriving residential and commercial markets throughout Texas and the South Central US. Examples of Industries: materials research, energy efficiency systems, building security systems, weather-proofing systems, computer systems integration, and modular or prefabricated buildings design and assembly.

Advanced Materials
Katy is in close proximity to one of the largest petrochemical complexes in the world. This location allows suppliers of advanced materials to be strategically situated among multiple suppliers of resins and other upstream inputs, as well as at the heart of one of the world’s leading advanced materials research centers. Examples of Industries: advanced polymeric materials, composites, extrusion-molding, and advanced building materials research and testing.

Transportation and Logistics
The Katy Area and the wider region are served by an excellent transportation system, including major interstate, rail, seaport, and air facilities. The Katy Area also offers several large prime acreage tracts suitable for transportation and logistics firms with both interstate and rail access. Examples of Industries: trucking and warehousing, port-related distribution, retail distribution centers, logistics, and supply chain management.

Healthcare

Strong population growth in the Katy Area is driving demand for increased healthcare services, as evidenced by ongoing expansions among primary medical facilities. The Katy Area’s healthcare sector has a workforce totaling more than 4,200 workers and generates revenues of over $500 million annually. Examples of Industries: allied health, medical and diagnostic labs, outpatient care centers, and specialty hospitals.

Energy Services
The Katy Area, which includes the world famous Energy Corridor, is home to headquarters for BP America, ConocoPhillips, ExxonMobil, Mustang Engineering, and Shell. This concentration of the “majors” has resulted in the area also being a leading business destination for a number of energy-related companies. Examples of Industries: energy consulting services, energy related software and other IT services, corporate headquarters for energy firms, and energy related research and development.

Business and Professional Services
Examples of Industries—Software development, information technology services, and financial services.

Recreation and Leisure Services
Examples of Industries—Outdoor recreation, semi-pro or minor-league spectator sports, and family entertainment parks and venues.

We just had a question. We’ve Checked our Neighbor Association’s Paper and are confused about the current project (undertaken behind our homes) begun this morning. We are in the Westlake subdivision along the ditch which is a tributary headway of Mayde Creek. As I type this a team of massive earth movers and diggers are mowing down the trees behind and several hundred feet from our home. Is this merely an expansion of Park Row as proposed some time ago(we beleived that they would hook it to Green House) or is it more businesses/neighborhoods coming in? Thanks for your help on this, the Cliftons at jtcclifton@juno.com

I have a question for anyone that knows the answer.
What is all the construction on I-10 West on the south side of the freeway across from the Igloo plant? It is a huge project.

There is a proposed wastewater treatment plant located @ Schlipf and Stockdick Road, as per a letter we received from the TX Comm. on Environmental Quality. Since we live on Stockdick Road, we are wondering if they are going to put a subdivision in the immediate vicinity. We are very curious! Can you please enlighten us? Thank you so much for any info you may have.
