Dining Review: The Twisted Fig

Twisted Fig Katy TexasWell, let’s hope that three times a charm for the Twisted Fig. This is the third restaurant in the exact location, but is far from being the exact same restaurant. It is just getting its legs beneath it but is up and going. It was called BJ’s Grill and Red River Grille. Now 20680 Westheimer Parkway is Twisted Fig. It is located near the corner of Westheimer Parkway and Fry Rd. next to CVS Pharmacy; even though the banner or sign is not present. This does not take away from some of the most delicious food I have ever eaten at this quaint wine and dine place. When Twisted Fig gets finished with their plans of drapes, décor and add-on bar; this place will be filled to the max.

In the meantime, you can enjoy some of the best European fare this side of the Atlantic without the wait. If you have ever had Mushroom Risotto, forget it because it does not compare to the Risotto that you can enjoy here. Chef Ramsey from “Hell’s Kitchen” would have to bite his tongue and give this Risotto a highly acclaimed recommendation without firing an aspiring chef! After you get past the delectable risotto, please try the crab cakes. Don’t tell them, but I think they forgot to put any breadcrumbs or fillers in… they are loaded with crab. A reduced balsamic vinegar drizzle around the plate is a must to go with the crab cakes! (Ask for extra!)

The Chicken Roulade was like a piñata on Cinco de Mayo with different flavors bursting in my mouth! After sampling it, a southern inner voice came out and said, “Well butter my biscuits and slap my buns because this is some good food!” The pork chops on the dinner menu (which has a fancy name that cannot be recalled at this moment) was also an explosion of taste with the presentation mimicking a Da Vinci painting. The menu was everything from feast to modest. Modest being salads, of course, although the salads did not seem to have too much modesty. From the look of other diners that had salads, the quantity was big enough to feed the population of The Sovereign Military Order of Malta.

Once you are full and cannot eat another bite, you must dive into my favorite dessert, the chocolate mousse. It was so enjoyable that I imagined it would be like kissing Angelina Jolie; it is so rich and you are going to get a mouth full. You might be so satisfied that you go out and adopt two or three children from different countries.

One thing that you will notice that there is an opposite correlation to Michael Jackson when comparing the restaurant; which is that, taste and presentation trumps money here.

Please do yourself a favor and take the time to visit Twisted Fig before it fades like one of the biggest 80’s fad, Billy Ray Cyrus’ Mullet. By the way, Killer Kuts is next door if you still have that Mullet!

I spoke with Michael Laico over at Twisted Fig and he said due to sign problems and issues with the local HOA it could be up to 4 weeks before his new sign is complete.

My wife and I ate at The Twisted Fig this past Sunday and it was GREAT! The crab cake appetizers were to die for. All the food was cooked to order, nothing premade. The chef is absolutely amazing and we are lucky to have him to ourselves in Katy. If you like fine well prepared food you must try this place. Chef Ricardo will even come to your table and meet you. I have lived in Katy for 7 years and eat out 3-4 times a week, this is the best restaurant I have eaten at in the Katy area.

If they have any sense about them I hope the HOA will embrace this treasure and give them the support and consideration they need with their signage. I live in a Historic Preservation Neighborhood and we’ve had our fair share of dives over the years…but we finally got a charming and divine eatery on our periphery.. They are drawing a more affluent clientele who have started to buy into our neighborhood. Its a win-win-win situation. Now they are expanding, having purchased a historic but derelict garage and are transforming it into a gourmet grocery and artisian bakery!

A agree Emmah. I have never been a fan of the generic looking strip-center signage that is all-too-common these days.

WOW! My son and I ate lunch at The Twisted Fig today, and it was GREAT food! I had the Brie, Basil and Chocolate Sandwich (yes, you read right CHOCOLATE!) and I must say, it sounded ‘weird’ but it worked. YUM-MY! The combination was unique, but I wanted to try something different. This definitely was exactly that. (Good for confirmed choco-holic like myself) Such a pleasant departure from the same old dishes served in other restaurants. The accompanying fries were delicious as well, and I am not a fries person. My son has the Grilled Chicken Sandwich, and he told the chef it was the best he’s ever tasted. I wish the best for this little gem of an eatery! Definitely a place for those with higher caliber food palates.

We do love this new restaurant!!!! And lucky for us, it is close by. We hope all of Katy will find out about this great place – they deserve to be known.

Their Chicken Roulade is just the best! My husband gets this every time because this is his favorite. Also, the crab cakes are the best I ever ate. The salmon is just delicious and a new addition to the menu that I was delighted to try! The risotto – oh yes!!!! I am hooked.

If all this is not enough, the owners are such wonderful, friendly people who want to please their guests.

We went there this evening since it is close to home. I loved it. It is a nice place. The tables were not so close together. It is clean, the wait staff was friendly and tentative but not smothering. The owner comes and shakes your hand. We met the chef. We loved his cooking, Richardo. We had the crab cakes, chicken roulade and salmon. WOW, it was delicious. I brought the mouse home only because we are too full to eat it, but I tasted it, it is decadent. I love the sauce it came with. Everyone was so nice, especially our waiter, Joel. Thank you for opening a classy, small place close to home. (Funny, some have issues with the decorating but I thought it was simply classy. If you do not like it, your tast buds shall distract you.)

I am so glad to read that other diners are enjoying this restaurant. I went back in for lunch and had the twisted cherry salad and they could have used my plate for genetic testing since I licked the plate clean! Please go back for seconds and thirds and …

Haha.. I’m loving the enthusiasm. If these reviews are true it will not fade away like billy ray. I need to give it a try I guess. Will report back with my findings.

I have eaten lunch at the Twisted Fig three times. Had the Greek salad each time, the Pea soup, grilled Chicken sandwich, french fries, and today, Carrot soup. All listed items were delicious. Can’t wait to try dinner there some evening soon.

I am only a 12-yr-old boy that went to eat with his Dad there and I had forgotten that my Mom wrote this article until I told her of my wonderful dinner tonight with Dad. The Greek Salad was awesome and it had a kick to it. And… I ate the whole thing. I also had the crab cakes that were delicious beyond any words. And last but not least, I had the cream brulay (spelling not sure) and it was so GOOOOOD! After I told my Mom, she asked me to write what I thought about the restaurant on this website. Again, dinner was sooooo gooood! I can’t wait to go back there again, maybe this time with my Mom, Joyce.

twisted fig is the best kind of food you can get when i go there on sundays i get the pork chop it is the best thing ever! everyone should go there

  • Edward Haefner

the twisted fig did not live up to the expectations created by the reviews I read prior to dining there last week…the highly touted crab cakes were not available and the vanilla shrimp ordered instead took more entirley too long to arrive and were awful…the pork chops were okay and the risotta was poorly done…the chocolate dessert was mediocre…

I am glad I’m not the only one who is disappointed. I had eaten here with some gal pals during the summer for lunch and I couldn’t rave about it enough. So I suggested to my husband that we go for dinner a couple weeks ago. Not the same place at all! My husband’s pork chops were pathetic (like leather) and overall he was not impressed. And like the gentleman who wrote his review before me, our meal took way too long to be served. I know gourmet food takes time to prepare, but this was unusually long. My meal (can’t remember what I had – it didn’t leave a lasting impression) but not on the level that the food was before. I will not go back since it’s obvious that the quality may be going downhill. Oh? And the crab cakes? Way overrated.

I don’t know what happened, but I think it’s a different chef now because the food really sucks. Does anyone know what happened??????????????????????

  • Janine Godwin

I don’t know, but I ate there for lunch a couple weeks ago, had my favorite sandwich “The Chocolate Twist” and it was good. I will admit the service was real slow, and it did take close to an hour to get our food… not good when you are on a lunch break and need to get back to work. But it was good food which was the saving grace. I hope this restaurant makes it.

  • Emma

I am actually at the twisted fig now on my lunch break, and I have been waiting 45 mintues and still have not got my food. Guess I will be late getting back to work!

  • Janine

Emma, as you can see from my last entry, I had the same experience. I was thrilled the first time I ate there back in July, and raved to everyone about it. Now after my last 2 experiences, I won’t return, no matter how good the food was. It looks like it soon may be on the chopping block, as the parking lot is always empty, and they have done nothing to upgrade the decor. That to me is a sign of pending doom.

Ate dinner there with my wife tonight. Thought the food was good, but the service was really bad tonight (Saturday, Feb 28th 2009). There were only a few other couples eating in the restaurant, actually with two servers to cover those four couples….so service should have been great. The food was ready in a reasonable amount of time but our server was just extremely inattentive, basically a young kid hanging out in the back chatting with the cooks. After my wife and I went for ten minutes with dry wine glasses, I had to get up and ask the hostess to please go find our server. My wife saw the hostess and server have a chuckle about it. It was still about five more minutes after that before we got more wine….all as the place was DEAD. Not very cool experience to have when you and your wife are spending $128!!! on a “nice dinner.”

  • James

Went to Twisted Fig for the first time last night. The food was good (crab cakes, tile fish); but the service was very “inattentive”. Even though there were only a few other tables between two servers, there were some LONG gaps during which our server never came around; our glasses stayed empty so long……we had to go ask the hostess to find our server. The food was good enough that I will give the restaurant another try, but service like that again for a $128 meal for two will = no more trips to Twisted Fig.
