Gridiron Ace’s Breakdown
While the headlines of most papers claim red, it is the boys in maroon making all of the noise in 2009. Cinco Ranch is 2-0 on the year and have been playing solid ball as of late. No telling how long this trend will continue, but the Cougars’ latest achievement was this past Saturday when they took care of Cy Springs 42-17.
The Cougars busted it wide open early when running back K.C. Nlemchi and quarterback Zach Myers both found the end zone. Nlemchi was the game’s leading rusher with 105 yards and two touchdowns. Myers was 14-of-20 for 224 yards and three touchdowns, one of which was the Nlemchi for 38 yards.
Receivers Carson Sublett (4 rec for 75 yards, TD) and Alex Ludowig (4 rec for 34 yards) were the primary targets. Brett Pennington had two catches, one of which was a 6-yard touchdown catch.
The Cougar defense held Cy Springs to 277 yards and forced three turnovers.
Once again it was the Katy football team playing in what many would call the big game of the week of the district. And while this was the year for Katy to avenge last year’s thrashing (47-0 in 2008) from The Woodlands, it was the Tigers falling again in a close one 31-27.
Known for their tough defense, the Tigers faced off against one of the city’s best with running back Daniel Lasco in the backfield. Lasco ended the game with four touchdowns (big runs of 77, 51, and 44-yard) and 258 yards to lead the way for all backs in the game.
But enough about The Woodlands, Katy had a few miscues that ended up coating in the end. A missed opportunity on a field goal and extra point would have closed the gap that was the amount of points lost. Aside from this, ten uncharacteristic penalties were called on Katy, totaling 105 yards lost.
Leading the way for Katy was running back Will Jeffery who had 227 yards and two touchdowns. Filling in for the injured Donovonn Young (who is said to be out for 6-to-8 weeks) was Vernon Jeffries a player who has done well for the Tigers when called upon. Jeffries had 101 yards and a score.
Still seeking a win for 2009, Morton Ranch ran into the new kids from Fort Bend Travis in Week 1 for a match up. It ended up as a nearly solo performance on the Mavericks side of the ball, thus a 36-25 Thursday night loss was the result.
On the bright side, athlete Wes Hudson did all he could in the game, scoring all of the Maverick points. He had 18 carries for 188 yards and three touchdowns. Hudson also had a 9-yard touchdown catch from quarterback Tyler Saltal.
Not so great results from Mayde Creek and Seven Lakes. The Rams fell at the hands of a strong Class 4A team Richmond Foster 30-7 while Fort Bend Dulles blanked Seven Lakes. Both teams still seeking the first win in 2009.
The Taylor vs. Fort Bend Austin game was canceled due to weather concerns.
This week’s match ups:
Katy vs. Bellevue (Washington)
Mayde Creek vs. Alief Taylor
Cinco Ranch vs. Cy Ridge
Taylor vs. Rosenberg Terry
Seven Lakes vs. Richmond Foster
Morton Ranch vs. Langham Creek
