The Rhodes Report 10/16/08: Cougars Running Wild

Published on October 16, 2008 by The Gridiron Ace

cinco cougars running wildWe’re back with edition No. 4 of the Rhodes Report sports blog. Once again, this is an exclusive to the readers of OnlyKaty.com. District 17-5A play began this week and it will be interesting to see how things will fare in the weeks to come. The Gridiron is here to bring you all of game recaps and scores. Remember since there are only six teams in the district, a mere two will head home after Week 10.

For this week, Katy manhandled the Franz Road boys, Mayde Creek starts off district play right, and Cinco Ranch is still undefeated against teams in Greater Houston. Check it all out right here on the Rhodes Report.

Cougars running wild

Cinco Ranch quarterback Shane Ros and running back Adam Hirtz had 119 and 118 yards and three touchdowns in a 35-0 win over Taylor. Going into the game each team was 4-1, with Cougars now having the advantage with the win.

The Cougars racked up 399 yards in the win and gave up 223 yards defensively. Aside from Ros’ 118 yards rushing, he also had five completions for 81 yards. Four of those receptions were to Ryan Moos, who had 64 yards receiving.

On the defensive end, Devin Friar 45-yard interception returned for a touchdown was the nail in the coffin late in the third quarter.

For the Mustangs, running back Steven Sartory had 68 total yards on the night.

Second-half surge propels Tigers

Through one half, this was a pretty close ball game. But Katy’s 24-point second half proved to be the difference as the Tigers snapped Morton Ranch’s six-game win streak with 44-14 victory.

Early on though, the match was fairly even with both teams going with the ground game. For Morton Ranch it was quarterback Joe Mitchell and running back Michael Venson and for Katy the tandem running backs Vernon Jeffries and Michael Webber kept things interesting.

But with the score only 20-14 (Katy) at half, many would believe that this game could have been closer. The Tiger offense and defense took things to another level in the win. When it was all said and done, Katy held Morton Ranch to 183 total yards.

Jeffries made his response known rushing for 178 yards and two touchdowns. Mitchell led the way for the Mavericks with 125 total yards and a touchdown on the ground.

Hines gets the job done

Surely, Mayde Creek running back Devown Hines wanted to be a factor in last week’s game. But he probably would not have guessed that he would score the game-winning touchdown.

With less than four minutes remaining, Hines scored from 13-yards out to hold off Seven Lakes with a 35-28 win. On the night, Hines had 134 yards, which was a good chunk of the Rams’ total yards, and two touchdowns (scored the first and the last).

For the Spartans, the passing game mainly consisted of Dalton Livingston and Anthony Kendrick. Livingston was 11-of-23 for 155 yards and three touchdowns, all of which went to Kendrick who hauled in six passes for 97 yards. Kendrick also threw a touchdown pass to Livingston at the end of the third quarter.

This week’s match ups:

  • Cinco Ranch vs. Morton Ranch
  • Katy vs. Seven Lakes
  • Mayde Creek vs. Taylor
