Constantine passed away on Tuesday, January 10, after receiving care at the intensive care unit of the Hygeia Hospital in Athens, according to the Associated Press.
Before taking the throne at the age of 23, the late monarch earned a sailing gold medal at the Olympics. He later wed Princess Anne-Marie of Denmark, with whom he had five children. He served as the last monarch of Greece until the monarchy was overthrown in 1973.
King Charles III is a second cousin of the late Greek monarch because he was an uncle of Constantine and passed away in April 2021 at the age of 99. The monarch was present for his godson’s 2010 royal wedding to Princess Kate as well.
Constantine’s passing occurs as Prince Harry‘s first memoir, Spare, which describes many contentious moments with the royal family, including his tense relationship with 40-year-old William, is published.
