Armed guards keep watch on thousands of people living and working behind barbed-wire gates in a Soviet-era city deep within Russia. In the minds of the locals, they are the world’s nuclear shield and the only ones who can save it. As a result, they’re taught that everyone outside is their archenemy.
CITY 40 is a notoriously polluted site in Russia that houses the country’s largest store of nuclear fissile material. While in CITY 40, the film crew meets a single mother and a small group of brave people who are willing to put their own lives in danger in order to expose global human and environmental crises.
City 40 Plot
In a remote part of Russia, photographer Samira Goetschel sneaks into a city where nuclear workers and their families dwell just beyond heavily guarded fences and walls. Residents of Ozyorsk, Chelyabinsk Oblast, often known as Ozersk or “City 40,” are shown going about their daily lives in this video. Mayak, the birthplace of Soviet nuclear weapons development and the scene of the Kyshtym disaster, is just a short drive away from here.
There will be a list of previous and existing secret cities from all over the world as you watch the video.
