House of the Dragon spoilers is present in this article.
As word spread that Henry Cavill would be reprising his role as Superman, admirers of the actor took to Twitter to express their desire for Cavill to portray Aegon the Conqueror, another legendary character. Aegon the Conqueror is known as the fabled first king of Westeros and will be recognized by fans of Game of Thrones and House of the Dragon.
He is the one who restored peace to the land by uniting six of the seven kingdoms. Aegon the Conqueror has been portrayed in these series for years as a hero of Westeros, even though he may not have the same level of cultural mythos that Superman does in the actual world.
According to King Viserys I (Paddy Considine) in House of the Dragon, Aegon I had a dream that a Targaryen must rule and unite all of Westeros if the realm is to be ready for the return of the White Walkers. This is why he set out to conquer the continent. Because of Aegon I and his dream, the Targaryen Dynasty as we know it came into existence.
Any mention of Aegon in House of the Dragon must be through flashbacks because his reign takes place so early in Westerosi history. It isn’t completely impossible for House of the Dragon to employ flashbacks in season 2 or later seasons given that the series has already used time jumps to advance its plot.
When Rhaenrya Targaryen (Emma D’Arcyposition )’s on the Iron Throne is taken by her younger brother Aegon II (Tom Glynn-Carney) in the eighth and tenth episodes of season 1, Aegon I’s dream and prophecy play a significant role in her hesitation to start a war.
It would make sense for the series to further stress the significance of the dream by transporting us back to Aegon the Conqueror because she is the only person living who properly understands what is at stake.
Henry Cavill has already shown that he can manage the pressure of playing a character who carries a lot of baggage from fan expectations thanks to his stint as Superman in whatever the current iteration of the DCEU is and as Geralt of Rivia in Netflix’s The Witcher.
Cavill has demonstrated his abilities as the protagonist of a significant fantasy book and his proficiency with sword-based stunt work in “The Witcher” (check out the breakdown he does of an epic season 1 fight scene below). Additionally, Cavill looks fantastic with long, frosty blonde hair and could completely pull off the Targaryen look, as fans of The Witcher, including me, already know.
I personally would love to see Henry Cavill play Aegon the Conqueror, whether it’s just for a single episode or if he eventually gets his own spinoff, though the latter doesn’t seem as plausible given Cavill’s busy schedule. He exudes an endearing charm that is ideal for a person like Aegon, but he also conducts himself with a fortitude befitting a victor.
The desire for Daemon Targaryen (Matt Smith) is already at critical levels, so Henry Cavill as Aegon the Conqueror may push the House of the Dragon stands to the brink, but in my opinion, it would be worth it.
Fans of Henry Cavill believe he should portray this enduring Game of Thrones character, according to Den of Geek.
