Stranger at The Gate Where to Watch

In his award-winning short documentary Stranger at the Gate, Joshua Seftel examines a U.S. Marine and the Muslim village he tried to bomb.

U.S. Marine Richard “Mac” McKinney and the worshippers at the Muncie Islamic Center are on a collision path in the novel Stranger at the Gate. This topic is important because of the widespread miscommunication and chasms between cultures that exist in our society today. — Joshua Seftel

Mac McKinney, a U.S. Marine of 25 years service, returns to his home state of Indiana filled with unquenchable hatred toward the enemies he has fought. Still driven by patriotism, he intends to blow up a mosque in the area.

When he actually confronts the group of Afghan refugees and other Muslims he has targeted for death, however, his plans take a surprising turn.

Joshua Seftel’s Secret Life of Muslims (SXSW) project, which uses cinema to combat Islamophobia, has received nominations for both an Emmy and a Peabody Award. The most recent film in this series is titled Stranger at the Gate. Seftel, who experienced anti-Semitism in his youth, has dedicated the past seven years to studying and writing about this issue.
