Drew Barrymore is known for being warm and friendly on her talk show, which is called after her. But don’t get the wrong idea: Mom has been through a lot, and she’s not a pushover.
In a heated Instagram video shared Monday afternoon, the E.T. and Charlie’s Angels actress slammed “all the tabloids out there” for using her comments from a recent Vulture profile and said she wished her estranged mother was dead.
“You know what, all you tabloids out there? You’ve been messing with my life since I was 13,” Barrymore said. “I have never said that I wish my mother was dead. How dare you say those things for me!”
The fight started when Barrymore told Vulture about her talk show, which became a surprise hit and has her getting close to her guests and viewers. Barrymore is one of the most open celebrities working today, despite the fact that her difficult childhood was well-known and closely watched.
Barrymore’s mother, Jaid, is at the heart of her story. She and Barrymore haven’t been on good terms since she left home at 14. The host of The Drew Barrymore Show has also done memorable talks with Jennette McCurdy and Brooke Shields about the complexity of mother-daughter relationships.

“Their moms are all dead, but mine is still here,” Barrymore told Vulture. “And I was like, Well, I can’t do that. But I really can’t wait. I don’t want to be in a place where I want someone to die sooner than they should so I can grow. I want her to be happy, to do well, and to be healthy. But I have to grow even though she is in this world.”
Barrymore later felt bad about what she said about her mother, telling the source, “I dared to say it, and I didn’t feel good. I do care. I’ll not care. I don’t think I’ve ever been able to fully protect, shut off, not feel, or build up a wall.”
After the profile came out, many news sites said that Barrymore wanted her mother to die. When that happened, the star of Never Been Kissed stopped dancing in the rain and gave her own flood of hard facts.
