Remember that this episode’s actions prepared the audience for episode 10, the final one before a long break or the midseason finale. (You can give this any name you like.)
The fact that we now fully understand how hazardous Thomas Magnum and his friends’ predicament is—namely, that they are being pursued until they expire—is the most crucial thing.
In actuality, Detective Childs is now officially becoming collateral damage in this investigation. He called Thomas after finding the weapon crates and the images showing that Magnum was being followed.
The house he was in exploded not long after. Even if we never actually saw Childs’s dead body, it is difficult to believe that he would survive.
Over the past few weeks, we have generally pondered how this character would remain on the show.
Remember, Childs, was mostly brought on to represent the HPD on the show when Detective Katsumoto was without his badge. That recently changed, allowing him to resume his employment.
Of course, Michael Rady’s character might have left the show in different ways, but it’s obvious that the point of this was to leave you with your mouth open. It serves as a stark warning that nobody is safe.
Of course, none of this even mentions what happened to TC at the conclusion of the episode! You currently have to worry about that in addition to other things.
