Ren McCormack (Bacon), a Chicago-raised adolescent, moves with his mother to Bomont, a small Rocky Mountain hamlet, to live with his aunt and uncle after his father left. Shaw Moore (Lithgow), is an influential member of the town council. The crash claimed the life of Rev. Moore’s son, Ariel’s older brother. Ren gets challenged to a chicken game involving tractors after trading obscenities with Ariel’s boyfriend. He wins despite the fact that he has never driven a tractor. Ren is reviled by Rev. Moore, who forbids Ariel from seeing him and uses his clout to have Ren dismissed from the gymnastics team. Ren and his classmates seek to lift the dance ban and hold a senior prom instead. Despite earning a reputation as a “troublemaker,” he persists; his efforts result in his mother’s firing on the pretext that she isn’t being a good mother and his uncle’s loss of business.

Moore’s wife is pro-movement and tells him that he can’t be everyone’s father and that he isn’t even a father to Ariel. She also claims that music and dancing aren’t an issue. Ren appears before the municipal council and cites many Bible verses provided by Ariel to promote the value of dancing to rejoice, exercise, or celebrate.

Despite his change of heart, Rev. Moore and the other council members vote to maintain the prohibition in place. Ren first gives up, but his supervisor at a flour mill informs him that the mill is just outside of town and offers to allow the kids to use it for their prom.

Meanwhile, Moore changes his mind after witnessing some of the townsfolk burning books they believe are harmful to children. Moore puts an end to the fire when he realizes it has gone out of control.
On Sunday, Rev. Moore urges his congregation to pray for the prom organizers, who are high school students. For the first time in years, Moore and his wife can be seen dancing outside. Ren and Willard are challenged to a battle by Cranston and several of his pals, but they easily fend them off and return inside. “Let’s dance!” shouts Ren gleefully.
