Based on the same-titled novels by author L. J. Smith, The Vampire Diaries is a supernatural horror romance television series produced in the United States and created by Kevin Williamson. On May 19, 2009, the season 2009–10 was formally announced.
It debuted on The CW on September 10, 2009, to the greatest ratings for a series debut in the network’s history at the time, with 4.91 million live viewers. The fictional Virginian town of Mystic Falls, which has a mystical past, serves as the series’ main setting.
The Vampire Diaries Plot
Elena and Jeremy Gilbert’s dad passed away before the season began. Both are given into the care of their aunt Jenna. Elena begins seeing a boy named Stefan Salvatore, while Jeremy has become a recluse. Stefan’s vampire status is soon made known, and his brother Damon appears in Mystic Falls and begins randomly killing people. Bonnie Bennett, an acquaintance of Elena’s, learns she was born into a witch family and is a witch herself, which leads to another magical revelation. Her grandmother gives her assistance so she can use her abilities.
Along with Caroline Forbes, the sheriff’s daughter, Matt Donovan, Elena’s ex-boyfriend, and Tyler Lockwood, the mayor’s son, Elena’s friends and acquaintances all get involved. The Salvatore brothers were seduced by Katherine Pierce centuries ago, and she transformed them into vampires. Stefan kills Katherine Pierce, but Elena is revealed to be the twin sister of Katherine Pierce. It’s likely that Katherine was imprisoned in a tomb beneath the church, and Damon intends to free her. A rift between the brothers is caused when Lexi, a friend of Stefan’s who arrives and befriends Elena, is slain by Damon.

The Vampire Diaries Recap
The Vampire Diaries made its debut in September 2009, at a time when teenagers in headbands were running around the CW taking selfies and superheroes hadn’t yet emerged as the noisy opposition. In addition, True Blood was, well, a thing at the time the Twilight mania peaked (all love for Twilight, I have no career without Twilight). Vampires? Really?
That certainly felt a bit stale. I’ve argued here before that The Vampire Diaries is and has always been much better than it needed to be. It was an angst-filled teen drama with plenty of handsome hunks. It was capable of floating, but it chose not to. Julie Plec and Kevin Williamson, the authors, are great to be praised for creating a universe that is rich, tragic, and subtle, as well as for populating it with likable individuals. We also loved them.
